About Magnetic Radiance

Through my experiences as a light skinned person of mixed heritage, I carry the weight of a lifetime of microaggressions, along with being and feeling othered and unseen.

  • Words matter, what we say can be powerful. Words can stay with us for many years or even a lifetime, for good and for bad.

Reflecting on our own words and the lasting impact of the words of others creates energy. These words and the energy they create can trigger sadness, happiness, joy, pain, grief, trauma, excitement, anger, the list goes on.

Words connect us, yet they divide us and can be used to incite hatred and cause violence and pain. Words can be twisted and turned against you, and make you feel shame. Words can gaslight you. The words we say can create energy in a room, as well as the words we do not say. As though you can hear and feel the silence, the tense energy pushing through.

Through my experiences as a light skinned person of mixed heritage, I carry the weight of a lifetime of microaggressions, along with being and feeling othered and unseen. People often saying things in my presence that they would not dare to say if they did not have a pre-conceived idea of what they think I should look like. I am programmed to be on high alert to this behaviour, yet it is always jarring when it occurs. Creating a tense, anxious energy that I carry with me.

Searching for connection and acceptance, my teenage years led me to underground music and club culture, which has been woven into the fabric of my life ever since.

The dancefloor can be a safe space of sanctuary, and togetherness, a place that is free of judgement. Often for those who do not feel safe, seen or represented in the mainstream. It is not a space for talking, yet the words we carry and feelings they create, are brought to the dancefloor to create a beautiful and life affirming energy that connects us all. A place of belonging.
